PERSONAL.

Mr G. T. Warden left for the north yesterday by the second express. The Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., has returned* to Christchurch after a two months’ trip to Australia. Mr H. H. Sterling, General Manager of New Zealand Railways, is at present in Timaru.

Mr R. S. Kent (Divisional Superintendent of Railways) was in Timaru yesterday. Mr H. H. Sterling (General Manager of Railways), acocmpanied by Mr J. H. Bell (secretary) visited Timaru yesterday. Sir James Mills, chairman of directors of the Union Steamship Company, passed through Timaru on his way north yesterday.

A message from Dunedin states that Sir Thomas Mackenzie has found it necessary to enter a private hospital for treatment and rest.

Sir Emanuel Hoyle, principal of the firm of Joseph Hoyle and Son, Ltd., woollen manufacturers, of Huddersfield, is visiting New Zealand. He is accompanied by Lady Hoyle, and is making a tour of the Dominion. Mr John Coyle, secretary of the Newcastle Hospital Board (who was secretary of the Wellington Hospital Board a few years ago), is paying a holiday visit to New Zealand. Mrs Coyle returned from a trip to England by the Rangitane.

Captain Griffyth Fairfax, who represented Norwich as Conservative member of the last House of Commons, and Mrs Fairfax, intend to make a three weeks’ tour in New Zealand. They will arrive at Auckland on the Tamaroa to-day. Captain Fairfax is keenly interested in trade and migration. The Rev. T. T. Murray and Mrs Murray are expected to arrive in New Zealand shortly on an extended tour of the Dominion. They intend spending some time deep sea fishing at the Bay of Islands and other places, also to do trout fishing, at Taupo and then go to the Sounds. Mr Murray is “a sporting parson,” and he is Rector of Burton on the Hill (Oxfordshire). He and his wife hunt regularly with the Heythrop hounds, and for years he has gone to Norway for salmon fishing.

Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Fergusson will leave for England by the “S.S. Rangitata,” which is due to sail from Wellington on Saturday next at 4 p.m. Captain Orr-Irving will accompany them. The Press Association has been asked to state, for the information of those whose intention it may have been to send flowers to their Excellencies’ cabin on the vessel, that while such a compliment would be gratefully appreciated in normal circumstances, it would be a real kindness on this occasion if the custom were not followed, for the reason that for some time past her Excellency has been suffering from hay fever.

Advice has been received in Dunedin from Major-General Sir Percival S Wilkinson, K.C.M.G., C. 8., secretarygeneral of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, St. John’s Gate, Clez*kenwell, London, E.C.1.. that His Majesty the King, the Sovereign head of the Order, has sanctioned and approved of the appointment of the Rev. G. E. Moreton in the grade of chaplain to the Order. The late primate of New Zealand (Bishop Nevill) was a sub-prelate of the Order, and the present Archbishop of New Zealand (Dr. Averill) was appointed as his successor. The number of chaplains of the Order is limited to 30 in the British Empire,
