If one happens to reside in the King Country there is nothing like having a beverage with a “kick ’ in it. If you don’t happen to know where to get the real Mackay, well the next best thing to do is to try your hand at home brewing. Evidently this is carried out very successfully in Tauamarun,ui. Just before Christmas, when the police were having a cruise round in quest of liquor, they came across no less than 900 bottles of home brew. Finding a plant of home brew is an awkward job for a policeman, for before he can decide whether it can be made the subject of a prosecution, he has to sample quite a lot of the homemade hectar in order to discover whether there is any element of potency in it.

“About how many deer are there in New Zealand?” was a question put to a responsible officer of the Forest Service in Wellington. His reply was that in two provinces alone in the South Island there were over 2,000,000 deer, but the total in New Zealand was beyond his conception. They had multiplied ten times in less than as many years, to hazard something like an estimate.
At a meeting of the Otago Education Board a letter was received from the Owaka School Committee calling attention to the record of Mollie Read, who had attended the local school for 10 years without missing attendance once. The committee expressed the opinion that this was probably a record for Otago, if not for New Zealand. The Board resolved to send a letter of appreciation to the pupil named.
