PLUNKET SHIELD SERIES. WELLINGTON V. OTAGO. By Telegraph—Pres= Association. DUNEDIN, January 31. The Plunket Shield match between Otago and Wellington commenced in showery weather on an easy wicket. Light rain fell all the morning, increasing to heavier showers in the afternoon, which necessitated a stoppage of an hour and a half. The visitors won the toss, and elected to bat, and when stumps were drawn had lost nine wickets for 283 runs. McGirr gave a good display of correct batting, but the best innings of the day was that of Badcock, who has been appointed coach to the Otago Cricket Association. He gave a sparkling exhibition of scoring all round the wicket, demonstrating his claim to be regarded as a great batsman. He scored 62 in 72 minutes. McGirr gave a chance at 35, which was not taken. The pick of Otago bowlers was Lemin, who took four wickets for 61. Scores:—

Bowling: Dunning three wickets for 53 runs; Elmes none for 76; Lemin four for 61; Alloo none for 34; Moloney one for 27; Shepherd none for 19.

AUSTRALIAN TOURING TEAMS. COMMENT IN ENGLAND. (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, January 30. General surprise and regret is expressed at Ryder’s non-inclusion in the Test team, but the feeling is that the selectors have done their work well and built up a team good on all points. Australia need not fear for the batting strength, and the fielding should be of a i igh sta..aard, as youth predominates.

Hammond, the crack batsman, in an interview, says; “The Australians will take a lot of beating. Though it mi-nt not be strong on a sticky wicket, it is a fine batting side. Kippax, Jackson, Bradman and Richardson will give the crowds a treat. Many thought Grimmett would not come. I think he is still the world’s most accurate legspin bowler.” Leyland. the Yorkshire professional, says: “The side is weaker in bowling than I expected. I am surprised at the exclusion of Rvder, though Richardson adds to the fielding strength. Hornioronk should be a useful bowler in England, but is not so good as Wall who is Australia’s best.” Major Trevor writing in the Daily Telegraph says: “There is every reason to believe that the six best batsmen in the team, rank as the best rungetters Australia has ever produced. The bowling however is not deadly. I shall be surprised if Grimmett does not do as well as any one. The “Daily Chronicle” regards Woodful as a good choice in view of his suitability to English wickets. The “Times” says: The team is wonderfully strong in batting and the side is efficient in feilding. but somewhat doubtful in bowling. There is nothing to suggest invincibility, or cause extra heart beats among the Englishmen.

OMISSION OF RYDER. SYDNEY PRESS COMMENT. (United Press Association — By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received January 31, 10.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 31. He simply wished the team good luck on the tour. He would not confirm or deny that he had received an offer from an English newspaper to write comments on the games in England.
