Five actions for defamation, arising •out of the notorious “faked ballot box incident,” at the Labour headquarters in Sydney, some years ago, were concluded here to-day. The plaintiff, John Bailey (presid--ent of the Australian Workers), •claimed £SOOO damages respectively from A. . Willis, M.L.C., George Smith, J. O’Reilly, J. Howie and Dan Rees, former members of the Australian .Labour Party executive, alleging that •defendants had, as executive officers, prepared and read a defamatory report before the Australian Labour Party Conference in 1922, describing Baialey as a political leader, and impugning his conduct at an election of officers about that time. The jury to-day found in favour of j Bailey, and awarded damages as fol- ! lows-:—Against Willis £2750; Howie, Smith and Rees £500; and Reilly £250.
