HON. W. H. TRIGGS.
OBSERVATIONS ON TOUR. B' Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. The Hon. W. H. Triggs and Mrs ' Triggs arrived from London by the ! Ruahine, after an extended tour, j which included South Africa. } Mr Triggs took part in the inter-Par-I liamentary Conference in Berlin. He expresses himself as shocked at the racial bitterness in South Africa, and the distinctly anti-British feelin c shown by the Hertzog Government. The Treaty with Germany effectively debarred any further preference to Great Britain, and there 1 was no disposition in official quarters to encourage either British-made goods, British immigration or the investment of British capital. The anti- ' Imperial spirit war, shown chiefly in the Transvaal and Orange Free State, and was strongly resented by Natal and Rhodesia, which were thoroughly loyal to the Mother Country. Mr Triggs emphasised the tremendous handicap Britain is struggling with in the load of debt she faces, as a result of the war and debt settlements. Instead of being first as an exporter she is now third, America and Germany being ahead of her. He impressed the advantages enjoyed by France and Germany in regard . to loans through the depreciation of the franc and mark, but in the conclusion of the interview he said his desire was not to disparage these | countries, nor criticise the Macdonald Government, but to impress on New Zealanders with all earnestness in his power, that the Mother Country was labouring under great burdens, | and that to meet the terrific competi- I j tion with which she is faced, she ! needs more than ever the sympathy and active support of every loyal j member of the Empire, *
