Mr and Mrs Pratt arrived back in Timaru on Saturday by the express from the north. A Press message from Hastings says that Mr G. F. Roach, who was compelled to relinquish the Mayoralty, owing to a technical breach of the Act, was re-elected without opposition. The Governor-General, accompanied by Lady Alice Fergusson and party, arrived at Rotorua from Opotiki at G. 30 p.m. on Saturday after a good jouriifly. The Hon. A. J. Hanan (Otago) the Hon A. J. Stallworthy (Minister of Health) and his secretary, Mr Waugh, passed thorugh Timaru by the express from the north on Saturday. A cable message from London an» nounces that Captain V. W. Hickson, commander of the White Star liner •’Adriatic," who during the whole of war time, had a hazardous task while in command of boats transporting troops from Australia, has retired, having reached the age* limit. A message from Rotorua states that the town is full of visitors for the Governor-General’s farewell reception at Arawa Park this afternoon. Ministers of the Crown are the Hons. W. B. Taverner, H. Atmore. and J. B. Donald, besides nine members of Parliament. The Director of Forests, Lord Craigavon, and Sir W. Noble are among the visitors. Mr C. N. Harper, who will leave for England on a visit early in the new year, has resigned his position as manager of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. Mr J. A. Cameron, who is at prseent manager of the Invercargill branch, will succeed Mr Draper at Dunedin and Mr W. J. McKitterick has been appointed manager at Invercargill.
