TEMUKA.

THE COMPETITIONS. The concluding session of the Temuka competitions took place last evening, the attendance being exceedingly large. The individual performances of the competitors were exceptionally good. The musical judge, Mr Arthur Lilly, A.R.C.0., being particularly impressed with the quality of the music provided. He expressed the opinion that the competitions had revealed talent which augured well for the future of the art in this locality. The dancing sections were exceptionally strong this year, the outstanding performer being Miss Noeline Findlay, whose versatility impressed all the critics. Miss Gladys Bushell, of Ashburton, who acted as adjudicator in this section, expressed the opinion that the district is exceptionally well favoured with clever exponents of the art. The secretaries, Messrs H. B. Strange and B. Hughes, were most attentive to their duties, and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The ; following were the concluding results:— PIANO SOLO (9 years and under)— Myrtle Cooper 84ts 1, Margaret E. Gale 83pts 2, Colin Guild 82pts 3, Lorna Pye 81pts 4. Other competitors were—Margaret Muff, Paul Woodhead, Betty Simes, Rachel Austin. JUNIOR DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP RECITATION (under 18 years)—A. R. Kelman 88pts 1, Nancy Brownlee 76pts 2, Gwen Lyall 75pts 3. SONG IN CHARACTER (under 16 years)—Winnie Ives 66pts 1, Desmond Horgan 61pts 2. The only competitors. The only competitors. TOE DANCE (under 16 years, open) —Edith Mackay 85pts 1, Marie Stevens 79pts 2. The only competitors. RECITATION IN CHARACTER (Open)—Mr A. Crowe 90pts 1, Miss Mavis Skilling 84pts 2, Mr T. McCone 83pts 3. Also competed—Miss Brenda Wishart, Miss Edith Mackay. PIANO DUET (Open)—Misses Myra and Doris Paterson 79pts 1, Misses D. Leatham and A. Liddle 79pts (equal) 1. During the evening Miss Gladys Bushel, of Ashburton, the adjucator in the dancing section, gave an excellent interpretation of the Sailors’ hornpipe, and had to respond to an encore. All the winners will appear at a demonstration concert in the Dominion Theatre to-night.
