CALEDONIAN QUEEN .

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. COMPETITIONS ABANDONED. A meeting of the Caledonian Queen carnival committee was held last night. Present.—Messrs S. R. Burns 'Chairman), R. A. Rodgers. W. H. W. D. Hume. J. A. Hay, J. O’Leary, W. Burns and W. Dunn. The chairman said that when entries for the proposed competitions closed, it was found that they were not over numerous, and he had instructed the secretary to extend the closing date. The present list of entries in the various sections was not large, but there was plenty of variety. The fact that competitions were being held in Ashburton this week may have effected the entries to some extent, but on the whole, the response had been satisfactory, particularly in the elocutionary section. The meeting had been called specially to consider what nights the competitions would be run The secretary (Mr H. Parker), reported that the entries were as i allows:—Highland dancing 52, fancy dancing 29, elocution 56, vocal 9, musical 12; total 158. In reply to a question by Mr R. A. Rodgers, the secretary stated that there would be 38 competitors only. Mr J. O’Leary said that he did not see that they were going to make anything out of the competitions. Mi J. Hay: “There is not enough .variety.” Mr O’Leary said that by the timt they came to meet their expenses, they would be on the wrong side Mr Hay: “If we are not bound down to the hall, then we would be well advised to drop the competitions.” Mr O’Leary: Judging by the interest which is being taken in the carnival, it seems to me that the whole thing will be a wash out.” The chairman:. “The reason is because the members of the Societies concerned are not taking any interest in it.” Mr W. Burns: ‘The members of the. Caledonian Society themselves are not taking any interest.” Mr Hay moved, and Mr Rodgers seconded, that the competitions be abandoned owing to lack of entries. The chairman said that he was sorry he had to put a motion of the kind for they had suggested competitions with the object of giving local performers a chance. Tne motion was carried. The chairman said that so far as the carnival was concerned, he felt sure that they would come out on the right side. Probably they would not make as much money as they had set out to do, for those concerned were not pushing as much as they might. Some discussion took place regarding the inter-house girls’ sports meeting. the organiser (Mr W. Burns), stating that the girls were very enthusiastic, and were using every endeavour to make the event a Success. They had gone to some expense also, having purenased their costumes, banners, and so forth. There was keen rivalry between the houses, had been assured of a big crowd on the day For the physical drill display a great deal of practice was being put in, and this should be one of the features of the programme, which was a most comprehensive one, embodying running and cycling races, field events, and basketball, tunnel ball and overnead ball competitions. The chairman said he thought some prize should be offered to the winning house. Mr O’Leary said that a cup could be procured at a reasonable figure, ana it cculd be made a challenge cup Or. the motion of Mr Hall, seconded by Mr Rodgers, Jt was d-cided to give a cup, to be known as the Caledonian Queen Carnival Cup, to the house gaining the most number of points at the sports. Mr Hay said that it should be made clear that in the event of a girls’ sports association being formed, the cup would be handed over to them to deal with. If the proposed association was not formed, then the cup would come back to the Society. RUGBY CHAMPION.
