VANIKORO ISLAND.

POPULATION SUFFERS SEVERELY. (United Press Association—By Eleetrie Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received August 6. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 6. Arrivals by the Calulu to-day told of life at Vanikoro Island, in the Solomon group. It was stated that five years ago. the estimated population of the island was 6000, whereas it is now less than 100, measles and influenza having killed large numbers. Fever is also responsible for many deaths. There are about twenty-five white settlers on the island.
