Mr and Mrs Norton Francis and Miss Phyllis Francis, Christchurch, who have been for a trip to British Columbia, are returning to New Zealand by the Makura, due in Auckland on Monday. They will spend a few days in the North Island, before returning to Christchurch on August 16. It is interesting every now and then to be reminded that the young women of this present generation are not the only ones who undertake tasts calling for great physical strength, nerve and concentration. Miss Margaret Murray, Assistant Edwards Professor of Egyptology at University College, is a case in point. She has just published a book Called “Excavations in Malta.” which tells of the work she has been doing during the last five years. Miss Murray is now an old lady with white hair, but only her age has put an end to her digging in Egypt, and, as she puts it, “has to be content with Malta,” where she has discovered a Neolithic temple. Nevertheless, she does a twelve-hour day, from six in the morning till six at night, with her own band of workmen, and the evenings are taken up with writing out notes, developing photographs, and making sketches of- the “finds.”

COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ BALL. There was keen disappointment in Timaru last year when it was made known that the Commercial Travellers’ Association had decided to abandon . their annual ball. Previous fixtures had been conducted on such a lavish scale, and had proved so successful, that the event had come to be recognised as one of the most notable of the dancing season. This year members of the Association decided- to take up the running again, and they set about the arrangements with the same degree of thoroughness that had characterised their previous efforts. Strikingly beautiful as the Bay Hall was two years ago, when the travellers assumed the role of hosts, the decorations last night easily eclipsed all previous displays. The scheme was one which entailed a good deal of work, but one that amply repaid, by its appearance, for the time spent in preparation. From the roof of the dance hall hung 2500 snowflakes, to the end of each of which was attached a tin diamond, which, swayed and glistened in the light of several hundred gailycoloured electric bulbs. From the roof were suspended also several paper umbrellas, of varying sizes and hues. In each, on the upper side, were concealed bulbs, and these reflected soothing light on the scene of animation beneath. The walls were draped in flowing colours of red. yellow and blue cloth, as well as with a profusion of fernery. The two supper rooms were decorated in a charming manner with ferns, pungas, flax and balloons. The second supper room had been erected by the committee, a wooden floor, comfortably rugged, and ample heating, having been provided. The lounge was the picture of cosiness, settees and grass chairs providing seating. There was also a profusion of pot plants and evergreens, while the room was comfortably heated. Throughout the evening two orchestras provided continuous music, an additional stand i having been erected at the southern end of the hall. Both stands were festooned liberally, while the greenery was artistically arranged. Those present included Mrs C. S. Cray, black georgette; Mrs G. P. Wood, black satin; Mrs H.
