ROAD GUIDE WANTED.

To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald.” Sir,—ln a northern paper I read a day or two ago the following:—“A guide book is to be issued which, it is claimed, will deal adequately with the natural beauties and the tourist potentialities of the South Island. The volume, is being prepared under the auspices of the combined South Island Progress Leagues and Chambers of Commerce. At the recent conference of South Island Progress Leagues, a sub-committee, consisting of the secretaries of the Canterbury, Southland and Otago leagues, was set up to supervise its publication.” Can you enlighten your readers il any steps have been or are to be taken to have South Canterbury adequately dealt with in the projected publication? If the book is designed merely to cater for tourists from other countries, or even the other island, it no doubt will cover the one great commercialised resort of Soutn Canterbury quite adequately. But if it is meant for the general holidaymaker, it is desirable that it should include information concerning the manifold attractions of South Canterbury, particularly for the army of South Island motorists. I feel safe in saying that there is no town in the Dominion which offers —or can offer—such attraction to a car owner as Timaru. The number of trips which can be made from here is almost unlimited, and with mountain, river, bush, gorges and picnic grounds in profusion South Canterbury is a veritable motorists’ paradise. The trouble is that only a small percentage of visitors, and too few residents, are aware of it. Existing guide books pay scant attention to this territory, and a good deal of what information they offer is inaccurate. There is scope for an up-to-date and detailed route book for South Canterbury, which would guide visitors to the many worth-while trips South Canterbury offers.—l am, SECONDARY HIGHWAYS. Timaru, July 26.
