OBITUARY.

JOHN DEETON CHARLES RICHARDS. Mr Richards, who passed away on July 28th, at his residence, North Street, after a long illness, was the second son of the late Dr. Henry Richards (formerly of Bridgnorth Salop), one of the Canterbury pilgrims. As a young man Mr Richards took up farming pursuits, and successfully managed many stations and farms in all parts of Canterbury. He was first manager for the late Mr Wm. Gerard, at Double Hill and Snowdon Stations. After leaving there he became manager at “Dinda” Farm. Waitohi, for six years, until the lease expired, going from there to Kirwee and then to Raincliff Station. Whilst there he accepted the position of manager of Mt. Nessing Station, Albury, where he remained for six years. Afterwards he took up farming on his own account on a portion of Raincliff, which he disposed of after some years, and removed to the Rangitata Island. On leaving there he retired to Timaru, where he has resided ever since. The late Mr Richards married Miss Kate Elizabeth Polhill, of Adelaide, who, with two sons and four daughters, survive him. Two sons predeceased him, the eldest son making the supreme sacrifice at Gallipoli. Of the family living there is Mr L. S. Richards (Timaru), Mr R. D. Richards (W Tellington), Mrs B. Purvis-Russell-Montgom-ery (Weedons), Mrs H. Hayhurst (Hamilton), Misses Richards (2), (Timaru).
