TONED DOWN.
VIEWS ON ENGLAND. (Unit-d Press Association—By Electria Telegraph —Copyright.) PARIS, June 3. An authorised version has been issued of M. Herriot’s speech, substantially toned down. The reference to Great Britain, for example, Is: "How much happier she would be if she could count, as we do. on an abundance of agricultural resources to supplement her industrial wealth, so threatened by the development of the Dominions not without suffering.” [M. Paul Herriot's speeches on foreign affairs are always interesting and usually amusing, because it is generally considered necessary afterwards to issue, an "authorised version.’* giving exactly what he did say. In this case the authorised version differs considerably from the original which stated in a speech delivered at Lyons, M. Edouard Herriot stated: “England
will fall because she has sacrificed agriculture in favour of coal mines. Because she has the freedom of the seas she thought she could live by industry alone. What will happen when England's gold reserve is exhausted? She is threatened, as Venice and Carthage were. Let us take warning and preserve France as an agricultural country.”]
