LICENSING COMMITTEE

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Timaru Licensing Committee was held yesterday. Present. —Messrs C. R. OrrWalker S.M. (chairman), G. Hastie, J. P. Newman, J. F. Arnold, D. Grant and G. Bowker. The chairman said the police had nq evidence, in the matter of drinking by youths, to show that the youths had been supplied with liquor in hotels. There was a good deal of drinking carried on at dances, but he was pleased to say there was no evidence against hotelkeepers, of supplying liquor to youths, under the age of 21 years. The police report as to the cleanliness of hotels was very favourable, and the standard of accommodation compared more than favourably with other towns. There were two exceptions, the Hibernian and the Excelsior, which were old and out of date. The rebuilding of these hotels was a question, as they were not a credit to the town. The conduct of the hotels, continued the chairman, had been satisfactory, but convictions had been recorded against the licensees of the Washdyke. Shamrock and Club Hotels. In the latter instance, the responsibility rested with the barman, as the licensee had been ill. The chairman hoped the licensee would remember that his license would be in jeopardy if the hotel was not conducted strictly In accordance with the law. The police report in connection with the fire escape at the Excelsior, where rope ladders were used, showed a need for improvement. £ It was pointed out that a tender had been let whereby proper iron ladders were now being installed. Improvements asked for at the Hibernian Hotel had also been attended to. Renewal of licenses were granted as follows:—Grosvenor, Frank N. Drewitt; Crown, Percy T. Davey; Arowhenua, Wm. M. Coombes; Carlton, Alfred W. Brown; Queen’s, John H. Grover; Doncaster Arms, Washdyke, Donald Fraser; Hibernian, Wm. Jno. A. Clay; Sportsman’s Arms, Saltwater Creek, Matthew H. Richards; Royal, Frederick Carter; Old Bank, Jas. Baxter; Dominion, Joseph Lee; Excelsior, Robert McKniglit; Shamrock, Joseph Selway; Empire, Arthur Harvey. Transfer was granted in the case of the Commercial Hotel, from Sydney Cooper to John Henry Treacy, who was granted a publican’s license. George T. Wardell. Club Hotel, was granted a publican's license, also a conditional license for the South Canterbury Racing Club's meeting, and for the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting, on July 27. Applications for wholesale licenses were granted as follows: —R. Wilson and Co., Ltd., National Mortgage and Agency Co. Ltd., Maling and Co., Ltd., Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association Ltd., Milne. Bremner and Co., Ltd., and Baffin Bros., all of Timaru.
