GERALDINE

GYMKHANA. The gymkhana and fete promoted by the Geraldine Beautifying Society was held in the Geraldine Domain, in ideal weather. There was a large attendance, and the promoters are to be congratulated upon the success which crowned their efforts. For some time previously the ladies of the Society and friends had been engaged in procuring material for the various stalls which were on the ground, and the result was seen in the numerous useful and artistic articles with which the stalls were replenished. The Geraldine Band was in attendance, and under the direction of Bandmaster B. Benbow, played several selections which were greatly appreciated. The following were the stallholders:—Old Curiosity Shop, Mesdames P. W. Hislop, F. Fish, Kain, and Miss Hislop; produce, Mesdames J. Wordsworth, F. South, J. Dean, Mitclielmore, and Miss Hughes; plain and fancy, Mesdames J. Scott, H. Orbell; surprise packets, Mrs C. C. Bennett, Miss Cowan; tea room, Mesdames W. Fyfe, J. McWhinney, W. Barrett, W. Tangney, H. Coombes. P. Bennett, A. Pierce, Misses Rule (2) ; flower, Mrs Rodman, Misses Williams (2), Kerr, Smith, Bruce, and Townley; sweets, Misses Kennedy (2), O. Beli, E. Mcllroy, V. Dean; lucky dip, Mrs F. Naylor, ' Miss Naylor; side-show, Messrs E. Scott, C. C. Knight. Several competitions were held, in which the following were prizewinners:—Miss Kennedy (cushion) ; B. Logan (bedspread) ; J. Dowkett (doll); D. Lack (cake stand); G. Feilden (scarf) ; Mrs J. Kennedy (ink stand) ; Mrs Druramond-Sharpe (cake) ; Mrs G. Gamble (tea cosy) ; Miss Brunton (d’oyleys) ; Miss H. Ray (doll) ; G. S. Maloney (doll). The. amount of £92 16s 5d was received as the result of the function.

SCHOOL SPORTS. It has been the custom of the Geraldine District High School to hold its annual sports meeting separate from that of the primary school, but this year it was decided to combine the two, and also to join in with the fete promoted by the Beautifying Society, and on Thursday afternoon the combined function was held in the Domain. The various events were followed with interest, and the success of the competitors in the chief events was received with acclamation by the onlookers. The sports were controlled by the school staff, assisted by several others, among whom was Mr B. It. Macdonald, who acted as starter, while Mr J. McTlrov occupied the position of time-keeper. The events were got off on time, and all those concerned are to be congratulated on the success of the meeting. The following are the results: — HIGH SCHOOL. BOYS. 440 Yards.—P. Brenton (25yds) 1, B. At the conclusion of the sports the Mayor (Air J. Kennedy) presented the trophies to the various winners, and before doing so apologised for the unavoidable absence of the chairman n! the School Committee (Air A. AT. Ffye). Continuing his remarks, the Alavor said it gave him great pleasure to lie present, and to hand over the trophies and prizes to the winners, whom ho wished to congratulate upon j their success. Forty-five years ago he had attended the Geraldine School, and had taken part in the school sports, and he hoped that some of the prize-winners that day would, fortyfive years hence, be found carrying out the function in which he was now engaged. He congratulated the school upon the able manner in which the sports had been carried through, and lie complimented the beautifying Society.upon the success which it had ; achieved in carrying out it« part of

the day’s programme. The joint efforts of the School and tlic Association were a happy combination, as their efforts were for one and the same end—the impiovement of their own town. Mr Kennedy then distributed the prizes, each recipient being warmly applauded when coming forward. The following were those who received prizes:— HIGH SCHOOL. BOYS. Ex-pupils’ Cup. awarded for most points in open championship events — E. Williams. Cheyne-Farnie Cup, for high jump—B. McShane. Morrison Cup, for 100 yards championship—B. McShane. Morrison Cup, for 440 yards championship—E. Williams. GIRLS. School Cup. for most points in girls’ events—Mabel Ray. PRIMARY. Gold Medal, presented by the headmaster (Mr F. Piper), for most points gained : Boys—Malcolm Broad. Girls — Winnie Williams. In addition to these, many prizes were given in each event, and these wore supplemented by free admission tickets to the Municipal Theatre, given by the manager (Mr C. C. Knight).

SALVATION ARMY. On Mr*roll 24 and 25", Harvest Home thanksgiving services will be held in the Salvation Army Barracks, Geraldine. The services on the Sunday will be conducted by Major and Mrs Powick, of tbe Bramwell Booth Boys’ Home, Temuka, and they will be assisted by the boys from the Home. CROQUET. GERALDINE v. WEST END. A friendly match was plaVcd at Timaru between the Geraldine and Wo 4 End Clubs, resulting in a draw. Following are tbe scores (Geraldine names being mentioned first) : - Doubles. Momson. of Geraldine. Mr A. E. Jones, representative of the Vacuum Oil Company at Geraldine. has been transferred to Christchurch as the company’s representative for Mid and South Canterbury. He will be succeeded in Geraldine by Mr Valentine.

CRICKET. Mr B. R. Macdonald, Geraldine, has I arranged for a cricket match to be 1 played at Geraldine on Good Friday | and Saturday, between a Christchurch I team, led by Mr E. Luttrell, and a ! Geraldine team which Mr Macdonald is organising. Tncluded in the GhristI church team are M. L. Page (the cxNew Zealand player) and 1. M. Hamilton. both prominent players in cricket circles. ORARI. SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC. The Orari Anglican Sunday School held its annual picnic at the Orari Gorge. At 9 a.m. tbe pupils, teachers and choir loft the church corner for . their destination, where an early lunch was partaken of. Later on the party, | under the guidance of the Rev. E. ' Blakiston, visited the Tripp homestead, and spent a most enjoyable time exploring its scenic attractions. Games and races were held for tho children, and a dainty afternoon tea was provided.
