THE MAYORAL CHAIN.

ON VIEW AT BALLANTYNE’S. The mayoral chain, which has been presented to the borough, is r«pw on exhibition in one of Messrs J. Ballantyne alld Co.’s show windows. Tne chain is of 15 carat gold ; it was obtained from Loudon by the jewellers o; Timaru, and was designed by Mr P. Watts Rule, architect. The chain has fourteen links, clasp, panel and pendant, and as it was a, prerent to the town during the jubilee year of the borough, this has been specially emphasised by the decorative use of the figures 1868 and 1928, which support the central panel and connect the links, which are inscribed with, the names of the various Mayors since 1868 The panel is a beautiful piece of work, and has the New Zealand Coat-of-Arms in full coloured enamel on it. From this panel is hung the pendant, which is the gift of the ‘‘Timaru Herald” and the “Timaru Post.” It is circular in shape, surrounded by a laurel wreath, and placed on it is the Borough Coat-of-Arms in full enamel. The whole chain is an exceptionally fine example of the goldsmith’s art, and the Borough :s fortunate in obtaining such a beautiful mayoral regalia o.f office. The chief credit for the acquisition of the chain must be given to Mr O. Machattie, ex-Town Clerk, and those who contributed to the chain, which cost £2OO. They are as follows : —Mrs R. H. Rhodes, Mr F. J. Rolleston, Hon. J. Craigie, M.L.C.. the family of the late Mr J. J. Grandi (an exMayor), the family of the late Mr T. Hawkey (an ex-Mayor), John Jackson and Co. (in memory of the late Mr John Jackson, ex-Mnvor), Mr W. Angland (ex-Mayor), Mr J. S. Keith (ex-Mayor), Air W. C. Raymond (ex-Mayor), Mr John Hole (exMayor), Mr E. R. Guinness (exMayor), Mr J.
