CIVIL SERVICE ESTIMATES. (British Official Wireles«.) RUGBY, February 26. Although the Civil Service Estimates for the coming financial year, amount- : ing to £308,500,000, represent an ap- ■ parent increase of over £13,000.000 on tho expenditure under this head during; the past year, that expenditure in- i eludes over £20,000,000 passed during; j the year as Supplementary Estimates, and the increase on the last Budget . figure amounts to £15,500,000. Nearly the whole of this increase Js 1 accounted for by the scheme to relieve ‘ industry, agriculture and tho transport ; trades of rates under the derating ' scheme. The Chancellor has, however, made special provision for the derating j scheme, and when this is taken into;* account, a net departmental increase of only £108.(300 is shown. Hie votes dealing with derating are as follow-

Grant to rating authorities. England and Wales—£l2,ooo.ooo. Grant to rating authorities, Scotland —£1,200,000. Railway freight rates—£2,3oo,ooo. Private mineral railways, local rates aiid grants—£27,ooo.

With the exception of freight rebates, the grants will not become payable until after October 1 next., when the derating scheme as a whole will coin®- into operation. Ihe estimated expenditure on war pensions, education, old age pensions and services of the Ministries of Health and Labour are the principal items included in the Civil Service Estimates.—British Official Wireless
