Congratulations to Kia Toa for their success in annexing the Champion of Champion Rinks. The final game was close and interesting, Kia Toa defeating Geraldine by only 4 points, 23—19. At the seventh head Geraldine led by one point, at the fourteenth head, Kia Toa led by one point, the final being as above. In the preliminary encounters, Kia Toa won the “A” section, winning all four games, defeating Waimate by 21 —19 : Timaru 18—16; Fairlie 22 —27 ; and West End (holders) 25—16. The x>revious holders, West End, a strong combination, on paper, won their first game against Fairlie 22—11, but were defeated by Waimate 22—17, Timaru 24—14 and Kia Toa 25—16. In the“B” section, Geraldine won the section with three wins and one loss, defeating West End 20—11; Temuka 17—12 : and Park 22—19; and they lost to Ashbury by four points, 21 —17. The champion of champion pairs played on Thursday last resulted in a win for Wept End with four wins in “A” section, and for Timaru with three wins and one loss in “B” section. The final will be played later between these two teams. West End defeated Kia Toa 13— Park 16—8; Fairlie 22—10; and Ashbury 12—11. In “B” section, Timaru defeated Waimate by 15 —13; Ashbury 12—11; Temuka 20—17 ; and lost to Geraldine by two points 12—10. Timaru are also to be congratulated on winning the Sidey Pairs competition, defeating Ashbury in the final by 88 points to 75 points. Ashbury, however, secured three rink wins, the turning point being the defeat of P. O’Hagan by E. D. Bust, the score being Bust 29, O’Hagan 7. Although O’Hagan lost by so large a margin, he and his partner, Stewart, played good bowls, but Matliewson and. Bust (s) were evidently playing better. In the final Bristol Cup match for this season, Waimate completed their season by winning their fourth consecutive match, defeating Park bv 23 points the scores being Waimate 168, Park 145. Waimate won in six links and lost in two rinks. There were no runaway scores, the biggest margin being 7. * Travers beat J. Miller by two points, Granger beat F. Hawkey by 7 points, Healey beat Dawson by 7 points, Nichol beat Dewar by 4 points, Manchester lost to Boyce by one point, and Jackson beat O’Leary by 3 points. MANNING CUP (Christchurch.) One of the most exciting games seen for a long time, was played on the Canterbury green last week. Two rinks each from Imperial and Christchurch Clubs contested the final, Imperial winning by the narrow margin of three points. The svstem of playing the competition allowed a young club, Imperial, to win a section with two rinks. While the Christchurch Club won its section with eight rinks, a ballot was taken of the Christchurch rink, two rinks being balloted out to play Imperial. Imperial skips were H. P. Dobbs and P. Buck, and Christchurch skips l)r J. D. Marks and Dr A. C. Sandston. Dobbs 14 lost to Mark 23; Buck 28 defeated Sandston 16. Total, Imperial 42 points: Christchurch 39 points. With the Manning Cup goes a beautiful red pennant. The Imperial Club is one of the youngest, while Christchurch is the oldest club in Canterbury. The game created a great deal of interest, and produced excellent bowls, the final result being in doubt until the last head was played. The following in Alloo’s Bowlers Annual 1906-7, is worth recording, and remembering:—

Life, like a game of bowls, is but an end, Which to play well the moral verso attend; Throw not your bowl too rashly from First let its course by reason’s eye bo planned; * Like heedless life, that finishes in vain. Know well your bias, here the moral school Scarce needs a comment on the bowling rule ; Plav not too wide, with caution eye your east, Use not extent of green or life to waste, Nor yet too straight,—in life observe the same, l The narrow minded often miss their I aim ; Bowling too short, you but obstruct the j green, Like him who loiters on life’s public Whoe'er at bowls or business cause strife, Will rub on green receive, and eke in fife, . . ~ One bowling trick avoid in moral play— Ah! never, never block your neighbour’s way, These rules observed, a man may play his game On bowling greens, or thro’ the world with fame.
