A telegram from Hokitika says that the five sitting members of the Westkind Licensing Committee have been re-elected unopposed.

It is understood that some important licensing cases will be heard m tin Timaru Magistrate’s Court to-day. A cable message from Sydney announces that the wholesale price qi butter in Sydney will be reduced |u, to 200 s 8d per cwt. Seventeen applications for exemption from military parades were heard by Mr C. R. On-Walker, S.M., in Timaru yesterday. Of this number, five were granted conditional exemption, and two total exemption. , Accommodation at Talbot Hospital. Otipua Road, is at present taxed to itutmost. To meet the demand, a large tent has been erected, to form tin sleeping quarters of several of the patients. Ihe number at present in tin hospital is 28. The nursing staff abc have, in cases, found it nocejsary u move to different sleeping quarters. A member of the crow of the s.s. Kia Ora, at present in port, was arrested last night, and will make his appearance in Court this morning or a charge of absenting himself without leave. This vessel seems to be expi ri encing some difficulty with her crew as two other members will also appeal on remand this morning, to face the Magistrate on a similar charge. Three fresh nominations for seats or the Timaru Licensing Committee were received yesterday. These were Messr J. W. Cartwright, J. R. Hart, am. G Hall. The other five nomination: are:—Messrs George Bowker, G. A Haj-tieJ J. F. Arnold, Donald Grant and J- P. Newman An election will b< necessary, as there are eight nomina tions for five seats.

While coming out of an office in town yesterday afternoon, Mr Frank ‘Goldberg, governing director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, had the misfortune to slip on the steps, falling heavily to the pavement. He suffered injury to his head, and abrasions ot the arms and legs, but after attention, recovered sufficiently to be able to be taken to liis hotel. His injuries, though painful, are not serious.

An example of a genuine “howler” in which the unconquerable optimism of the perpetrator sought to overcome a total lack of knowledge occurred in one of the secondary schools in Dunedin a few days ago during a lesson on the meaning of words (says the “Otago Daily Times.”) The word “decade” proved a pitfall for several of the pupils; but one bright young star, rather than confess her ignorance, furnished an astonished teacher with the following example of its use: “He had a decade tooth in his mouth.”

A party of English Public Schoolboys under the charge of Mr J. R. Darling, of Charterhouse School, London, will arrive in Timaru by the express from (Jhristchurch this morning. On arrival, they will be tendered a welcome to Timaru by the deputy-Mayor (Mr A. L. Gee), after which the party will adjourn to the Goode Intent© for li’jich. After lunch, the boys will leave on a visit to the Hermitage. Mr Ardell, of the Department of Internal Affairs (Wellington) was in Timaru yesterday, making arrangements for the visit. On arrival of the train. Mr Ardell, accompanied by Mr Darling, will leave for the Hermtaige, having lunch at Fair lie en route.

A Press Association telegram from Hokitika said that the visiting firemen were entertained at a monster picnic excursion at Lake Mahinapu, about 1000 taking part. An interesting sports programme was carried out, the outing proving most enjoyable. The weather continues excellent. Cass Square is in capital order for the opening of the Jubilee demonstration to-morrow. The programme lias been arranged by the Association on more modern lines than hitherto, and considerable interest is being shown. The visitors are very appreciative of the hospitality extended by the townspeople. A ladies’ commit-, tee is malting very complete arrangements for their entertainment.

At a special meeting of the Council of the Timaru Scottish Society, there were present: Chief J. Ramage, Councillors Hume, Miller. Emslie, Somerville, Robertson, and Young. The position of caretaker was dealt with, and Mr W. Yardley was appointed, for the new Scottish Hall. The matter of seating accommodation was left In the hands of the architect and Messrs Robertson, Emslie and Young, the committee to obtain a quote for the required number of chairs ar.d forms for the new hall. It was decided to apply for a license for the hall. It was resolved that no concert be held in March. Several additions to the programme of the young people’s concert were received.

At 10.45 last night, an outbreak of fire occurred at Talbot Hospital. Otipua Road. The Eire Brigade was notified, and with their usual promptitude, were quickly on the scene, the outbreak being soon subdued. 'The fire occurred in a building, used as a fumigating room, adjacent to the main building. It appears that a kerosene lamp, used in the room, took fire. One of the nurses on night duty noticed smoke issuing from beneath the door. The flames spread to a tent near the building, in which four patients were sleeping. The danger of a serious outbreak was quickly realised, and several ot the nurses, in face of considerable danger, succeeded in again closing tlio door, thus quelling, in a measure, the flames. The patients in the tent were removed to safety, and the Fire Brigade quickly had the flames under control. Very little damage was done, only a small amount of linen and clothing being burnt.

The first meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union for the year was held on Tuesday evening, when there was a very large gathering of members and friends. After devn tional exercises, Mrs Norrie welcomed the speaker of the evening (Mrs Don. of Dunedin), ex-Dominion president of the W.C.T.U. Mrs Don, who was listened to with the keenest attention, gave a most interesting address on child welfare, and bespoke for all children a clean birthright. Mrs Don made frequent reference to the sayings of Frances Willard, founder of the W.C.T.U., whose anniversary was being celebrated that day. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Don for her able and interesting address. The president and secretary were ap-jpefi-nted ddlorga'tes to the Dominion convention, to be bold in Wellington in March. Twelve new members were initiated.
