CONFERENCE OPENED. Bf Telegraph—Press AaaocUUon. WELLINGTON, Feb. 27. Tlie conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association was opened to-day by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Trades and Commerce Mr .J. Sutherland Ross (Dunedin) presided. The Hon. A. J. Stall worthy (Minister of Health), Mr J. W. Collins and Dr Marsden were also present. Mr Cobbe said he had recently visited works in Auckland, Christchurch, and Napier, and had been greatly impressed, even surprised. at the finish and quality of their products, and also by the favourable conditions under which the work was carried on. He was specially interested in what seemed now the chief industry at Napier—the manufacture of tobacco—which provided Nelson with a lucrative new branch of farming. He approved the Associations proposals regarding advertising New Zealandmade goods, and assured them of tilt Government’s desire to do all if reasonably could to foster New Zealand industries.
