SUPREME COURT.
PRISONERS DEALT WITH. HAMILTON. February 26. At the Supreme Court there Avere two similar cases of public servants accused of misappropriation. Charles James, for failing to account for £251 to the Public Works Office at Taumarunui, was sentenced to reformative treatment not exceeding one year. Counsel pleaded for leniency, the prisoner having made a clean breast of the affair, and he had an aged mother to support. Prisoner,offered to make restitution. Mr Justice Blair said that he would like to admit prisoner to probation, but there Avere too many such cases. In the second case, Colin Spalding Walker, lately assistant ToAvn Clerk at Rotorua, was admitted to probation for three years on the usual conditions, and Mas ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. The Judge considered the case exceptional. The evidence showed defalcations over a short period only. Walker made a complete revelation of tli© facts, and had apparently acted under duress. Counsel had stated that a woman had blackmailed Walker, knowing him to be well connected.
