ACCIDENT ON RAILWAY.
SURFACEMEN RUN INTO BY TRAIN. Four surfacemen employed by the Railway Department had a miraculous escape from serious injury, and possible death, about 7.20 yesterday morning. The men, whose names were W. O’Leary, E. Chiles, R. Johnson and F. Davidson, were proceeding south from Timaru on two velocipedes, two men being on each machine, and when in the cutting in the vicinity of the Caledonian grounds, they suddenly became aware ot the approach of a train. The front men jumped clear only just in time, for a moment later the train, a special goods from Oamaru, crashed into the velocipede, smashing it to inetch wood. The other two men were also c’ose behind their companions, and they had very little time in which to jump clear, their machine also being smashed up. O’Leary suffered slight abrasions to the leg, Chiles received slight concussion, and Johnson also had a leg slightly injured. Davidson, who was on the front velocipede, escaped injury. The men were not struck by the train, and it is surmised that they received their injuries in jumping against the clay banks of the cutting, and from flying timber.
