MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.
To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —There has been a considerable amount of kite flying anent the forthcoming Mayoral election, and as a ratepayer who belongs to no association or party in the town, I would like to give my opinion. For very obvious reasons it would be well that we should get right away from the bitter past and elect a Mayor untrammelled by the worries of the period referred to, while at the same time of constructive and administrative ability. We should also select a gentleman free from all parties and associations so that the town in general would feel confidence in its first Magistrate, as not being swayed by the north, east, south, west—or any other end of the borough; or by the capitalist or any other party. Inter alia, T may say I am a capitalist of very moderate means. However, what I want to come to is: that we should have an open mind in these matters, and do the best for the town in general, and I think that Mr Andrew Kennedy is the ideal man for the Mayoral position. He is a canny business man who has undoubtedly shown constructive ability, and in the handling of his large staffs he has shown high administrative talent. He has been long enough a borough councillor to qualify for mayoral honours, and not too long to be befogged by past experiences, and I think the town of Timaru should ask him to guide our destinies for a time, and give us a fresh municipal start. —1 am etc.. A RATEPAYER. Timaru, February 25.
