MILITARY TRAINING.
CAMP AT WAIANAKAB.UA. Commencing on Tuesday next, and continuing until March 12, preparations for the annual military encampment for the South Island, this year to bo held at Waianakarua, south ol Oamaru, are now almost completed. The lay-out of the camp has been completed. and work will commence on Saturday by an advance party, with the erection of officers’ quarters and other buildings. Colonel J. Hargest, D.5.0.,M.C., will be Brigade Commander, headquarters stall consisting of Major i). E Bremner, M.C.,N.5.C., as Brigade Major, and Captain H. D. McHugh. M.C., as Staff Major. Canterbury and Utago Infantry Regiments will be represented, and wnl be in charge of the following:—First Battalion Canterbury Regiment—Colonel M. L. Inglis, M.C. (in charge), Major S. D. Mason, second i*i command, and Captain W. Murphy as adjutant. Lieutenant-Colonel H. E. Barrouclough, D.5‘.0.,M.C., will command the Otago Regiment, with Major A. S. Falconer, D.5.0..M.C., as second in command, and Captain S. M. Satherthwaite, as adjutant. The 16th. (pack) Otago Artillery Battery, N.Z.A, will be in command of Lieutenant E. T. I. Parkinson, and Captain G. B. Parkinson, R.N.Z.A., as staff officer. The Otago University Company Medical Corps will be under LieutenantColonel C. E. Hercus, D.5.0.,0.8.E. The programme is a very comprehensive one, and is as follows: — Tuesday.—Arrive camp 2.35 p.m.; drawing camp equipment; setting up camp; short battalion parade. Wednesday:—(morning) : Section training in field work; (afternoon) : Platoon training in field work. Thursday:—(morning): Company in advance guard and counter attack; (afternoon) : company attack as reserve company, and consolidation. The Machine Gun Platoon of Canterbury Regiment will have a whole day doing battle practice with ball ammunition. Friday :—(morning) : Field firing (collective), rifles and Lewis, guns; (afternoon) : Otago Regiment advance guard attack*, Canterbury Regiment in* outpost. Saturday —Whole Brigade advance from Herbert to Waianakarua, Canterbury Regiment advance guard to force encounter of the w r holo force, with skeleton enemy. At night, march and assembly for attack at dawn Sunday:—Church parade, no military training. Monday:—(morning): Brigade review. Demonstration combined shoot with live shell and ball ammunition by artillery and machine guns. Shooting done will be on the ground over which infantry attack in the afternoon, and is t-o show the infantry exactly what support thev would receive from a covering fire by these weapons. (Afternoon) : Brigade attack on high ground south of Waianakarua river mouth. Tuesday :—Break camp. The Timaru quota for the camp will be about 130. This number will include 100 men from O. Company, and 30 from the Vickers Gun Section. The camp will be the largest held in the South Island for some years, and it is expected that it will be visited bv the Hon. P. M. Wilford (Minister of Defence) .
