LOW STANDARD ON MAUI POM ARE. By Telegraph^—Prw« Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 10. A statement setting, out- the wages paid on the Maui Pomare and comparing them with tl)e wages provided Jor in the agreement, between the New .Zealand. Seamen’s Union and the Shipowners’ Federation, has been forwarded Tf> the “Post” by the Seamen’s Union. According io the statement the wages on the -'Maui Pomare are as follows, tlie agreement rates being in parenthesis Boatswain £lO per month (£lO 4s). Quartermaster £8 (£ls 4s). Day man £lO (£ls 4s). Ordinary seamen not given (£lO 9s). Boy £3'(£s). Greaser £8 (£l7). It is further stated that the hours on the Maui Pomare range from S to iy per day, with overtime without payment, as against 8 hours per day with special payment tor overtime provided under the agreement. The Seamen’s • Union ha.-; also forwarded a copy of a. letter addressed by Dir Coates tn Mr Cook, president of the .Al'ia.nee of Labour, with reference to x.ne deputation which waited on him last June with regard to the Maui Pomare, in which Mr Coates said the Government had no intention of utilising the Maui Pomare as a means of '■educing the existing standards of seamen’s wages, or the general conditions 'law enjoyed by seamen employed in there waters, and pointed out that the riesire of the Government was that the Islanders should he given an opportunity on the Maui Pomare for sea training. The letter concluded by stating that the Government must reserve the right of prohibiting the crew becoming members of the various unions, this bo'iiv a ('.-’'(lition that ami’ies to other branches of the Civil Service, where the State services are concerned.
