MR CARR AT BELFIELD HILL. AND CULLMANNTOWN. At the store corner, Belfield Hill, on Saturday evening, there were 66 men and 25 women present in spite of heavy rain, to hear the Rev. Clyde Carr, Labour candidate for Timaru. Mr S. Holden presided. Later in the evening, Mr Carr was to have spoken in the Cullmanntown Hall; hut as this was not available, the meeting was held in the St. Michael’s Clubroom. There were 24 men and 6 women present, and Mr W. Tutton was in the chair. . . . Taking the Government Statistician’s figures, the candidate stated that the increase in the aggregate area of occupied holdings from 1918 to was less than 10 per cent., and the increase in Crown lands made freehold for the same period wds only one-sixteenth. The number of reap-
ers and binders, threshing machines and chaff-cutters had decreased in each case during the years 19 25, ' 1926, and 1927. Dealing with factory production from 1924 to 19 26, it was pointed out that capital, including reserves, had increased at ' double the rate of increase in wages. Trade per head of population for 1 1918-1926 had increased £2l 10s, and the public debt per head, £39. ’ The latter had increased £95,000,000 in 9 years. Withdrawals from ;■ the Post Office savings bank, 19 21I 1927, had exceeded deposits each year except 19 24. A typical example ' of accident insurance business was for the year 19 25—premium receipts £1,116,463; claims paid, £550,608; . totaP expenditure, £979,553. regard to bankruptcies, since 1922 ’ these had steadily increased, and the r amount received by the official-assig-nees had steadily decreased, s At each meeting a cordial vote of i. thanks was carried with acclamation.
