THE PUBLIC LIBRARY. The Public Library, which forms the corner block of the Municipal Buildings, was designed to meet the requirements of the Carnegie Institute, and it is considered to be one of the best, based upon the ideas of the Institute. On the ground floor is a commodious reading room in which all the most important periodicals and newspapers are conveniently displayed upon well-lit tables. The Chief Librarian has an office. conveniently placed for the supervision of the ground floor, and the approach ' to the upper floor.
The papers and magazines on the shelves are as follows: — 1 9 New Zealand Weeklies. 5 New Zealand Monthlies. 6 Australian Weeklies. 5 Australian Monthlies. 21 British Weeklies. 24 British Monthlies. 10 American Monthlies. 3 Quarterlies. 34 Daily Papers. THE ART GALLERY, Jn tile upper floor of the Library is also located the Art Gallery which, though small, is a constant source of pleasure to the townspeople and visitors. The ' selection of the exhibits shows tine taste and discernment. Some of the principal pictures have been donated by generous citizens, and it is noteworthy that many of the exhibits include works by North Canterbury and South Canterbury artists.
