TIMARU'S SENIOR COUNCILLOR.
Councillor T„ ,W. Satterthwaite, who is the senior Councillor; havingserved on the Council for about teen years, is the youngest son of the . late Mr Joseph Satterthwaite. who was a well-known resident of: the West Coi3t. Councillor Satterthwaite arrived in Timaru with his parents * in 1875. Ha came'here from Staf- ' ford Town, Hokitika, in the steamer Maori, lauding by surf boat, with his parents. . He was then a small child. Councillor Satterthwaite has seen Timaru grow from very small beb'r.uings, and has always taken a lieeh part in a good many of the town’s activities, including the field of sport. Councillor Satterthwaite was first elected to a seat on the Council as representative of the North-West W ard of the Boro ugh. He has served under six Mayors—Mr C. : N. Macintosh, Mr T; Hawkey, Mr ; J Craigie, Mr Win. C. Raymond, Mr H. J. Rollcston, and Mr G. J..Wallace — and he lias been associated With the most progressive works in the Borough, such as the underground drainage, electric light, extension of the water-works, provision of a Public Library, the Borough Abattoirs, the beautification of Caroline Bay and the Park, the purchase of the Maori Reserve, etc. In addition to his work on the Borough Council, Mr Satterthwaite served for six years as a member of the Timaru High School Board of Governors. He lie. - been a Justice cf the Peace since 1905.
