JERVIS BAY INQUIRY.
QUESTION IN HOUSE OF COMMONS. (United Press Association—By ElictrU Telegraph—Copyright-.) LONDON, July 11. In the House of Commons, the assistance rendered by the Navy to tho Australian Commonwealth liner Jervis Bay last month was the subject of further questions. Asked as to the cost, Mr Bridgeman said that in the absence of details he estimated the cost at £SOO, but until the full circumstances were known he could not say whether this Would be charged to the owners of the vessel. It was the duty of His Majesty’s ships to give every possible aid to vessels in danger or distress, and ifj the seivice rendered came under the ( heading of salvage services the Crown' Was prevented from claiming expenses' under the Merchant Shipping Act. | He added that the word “salvage” j was interpreted in a rather wide sense.! and he was advised that if there was 1 any mutiny, piracy or plunder eon-' cerned. the assistance rendered would be covered by the word “salvage,”
