In a Rugby League match at Newcastle, England defeated Newcastle. WAIRARAPA BEAT MANAWHENUA. Br Telegraph—Pres* Association. PALMERSTON In the presence of a crowd of approximately 4000 people, Manawlienua went down to Wairarapa by the narrow margin of 25 to 20. It was a fast scoring game, with the honours except in the last quarter of an hour very even. Manawlienua outdid the expectations even of their most sanguine supporters in running the Wairarapa combination to such a close margin. At one stage, they led the Greens by 20-15. In the last quarter of an hour the Manawlienua players Beemed badly tired, while the elusive Wairarapa backs showed up in a succession of passing movements which brought their score up from 13 to 25 points. For Wairarapa, McGregor, Faulkner, Jury (2), Cundy, Stringfellow and Cocke scored tries; Cooke converting two. For Manawlienua, Westwood, Crawford, Darragh, Galpin, and Totawa scored. Akuira converted one try and kicked a penalty goal.
