MONTHLY AIEETING. The monthly meeting - of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held at the Sailors’ Rest on Tuesday afternoon. Alls Butcher presided in the absence of Airs Norrie. A silent vote of sympathy with the relatives of Airs Brooker, one of the oldest members of the Union, was passed. Correspondence was read from the area seeretarj-, New Zealand Alliance, re annual area convention to be heiu in Timaru on July 12.. Airs Butcher and Airs Aiinifie were appointed delegates, and it was decided that, the Union give morning and afternoon-tea to the convention.

Airs Gordon, scientific temperance 6uperintende.it, gave interesting facts concerning some patent medicines and medicated wines; and Airs Stark reported on her visits to the Hospital.

Air Woodward reported for Alay and June that eleven overseas vessels had visited the port, 510 visitors paying about 1730 visits. There had been four Sunday services, three Sunday teas and three social evenings. At one tea, 33 men were present. As the s.s. Hurunui was in port on the King’s Birthday, about 22 men were given an outing to Hanging Rock, a trip that was very much appreciated by the men. On tlieir return, they were given tea at the Rest. Papers and magazines, which are always welcome, had been received from various members and friends, and u tin of biscuits from Airs Bruce. As Aliss AlcCorkindale was to be in Timaru on July IG, it was decided that if it can be arranged, members ant! friends meet her at the Sailors’ Rest on that day.

In commemoration of AVhite Ribbon Day, Airs Cave, AV.R. agent, read an instructive paper on the official organ, Illustrating the power of the Press as a moans of education and finishing with an article on the effect of alcoho’ on tlio muscle, nerve and brain cells. At the close of the meeting, a new member was initiated.
