As a result of assistance from some person or persons outside, two prisoners escaped - from the Woollongong gaol. . The helper then apparently walked Along the short passage to the cells, of bis friends, and supplied a jemmy, With which'"the- locks of the doors Were broken. 1 , The same instrument was used to (force,, the back door of the gaol, {through which the prisoners gained jfcheir (freedom. , ■.: Immediately the authorities were notified of the escape all the police Stations in the State were warned. The men were later recaptured at jGosford,. nearly 100 miles away, their •boots-almost tarn to pieces. They said {they had reemved occasional lifts. : ! 'Their -feet were blistei-ed, and they f . dflered little resistance when discovered.
