BOOKMAKER FINED. By T«l*CTai>b —Pros* Aifloclatlon. AUCKLAND, October 10. At the Police Court, John Francis O’Connor (35) was fined £io for carrying on business as a bookmaker. GAOL FOR ASSAULT Herbert Lawson, ladies’ hairdressei, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on a charge of assault arising oim of his conduct towards a young man whom he invited to a place of enteitaiiiineiit and made an appointment with. The appointment was kept by the young man in company with a detective.

SUNDAY TRADING CHARGES. By Telegraph—Preie A sedation. PALMERSTON N., October 10. Mr Stout, S.M., gave reserved judgment to-dav in a. caso in winch Vvilliam Patrick Casey was charged with Sunday trading, by selling a ‘Wellington weekly publication. The Magistrate upheld counsel’s contention that the office in tlic hotel where the paper had been left was not anmblic place. The information was accordingly dismissed. Henry Byers was fined £5 for selling chocolates on a Sunday.

ALLEGED BOOKMAKING. By Telegraph—Press Association. ROTORUA, October 10. A raid on Saturday resulted in tho arrest of Hori Alan and Gcoffiey Rogers. Tho former was charged with keeping a gaming house, and the latter °with assisting. _ They were brought before Justices this afternoon, and 'remanded to the 17th, and admitted to bail in £IOO and £SO respectively.

VALUELESS CHEQUES. By Telegrepfc—Preee AModation. DUNEDIN, October 10. At the Police Court, Arnold Vaughan Sutton, on two charges of obtaining goods bv valueless cheques, was sentenced to oiie month’s imprisonment, and admitted to three years' probation.

MINERS FINED. By Telegraph—Free* Aesoclatiiw. GREYMOUTH, October 10. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, John Yarrow Rutherford was convicted and ordered to pay costs on a charge of having fired three shots in the Liverpool mine, the coal not having been holed and side-cut as required by the regulations. A penalty was not pressed for. Harry Jones and Thomas Middleton were each fined 10s on charges of having tobacco and tissue papers in their possession in Dobson mine.
