HEAVY DEATH DUTIES.
BRITISH EXCHEQUER’S WINDFALL. By Ca bio—Press Association—CopyWghd. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received October 10, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 9. Death duties on Lord Iveagh’s estate will amount to £5,000,000. [The late Lord Iveagh, whoso death was reported yesterday, was a wellknown peer, whose third son, the Hon. Walter Guinness, is at present Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. The Earl of Iveagh _ was head of the brewing firm of Guinness. Ho is reputed to have been the richest man in Ireland and the second richest in England. His fortune is estimated at £20,000,000, and as will bo seen by the cablo messages above, the Exchequer will benefit very considerably by the death duties thereon. His son and heir is Viscount Elvcdon, Conservative member for Southend. Viscount Elvedon’s elevation to the peerage will necessitate a by-election at Southend.]
