The Pope received a hundred Roman Catholic London policemen, whom lie gave his band to kiss. The Pope recalled the policemen’s courtesy when directing him to Vestminister Cathedral. His Holiness said he also watched and admired the paternal patience of policemen while shepherding schoolboys across roads. He declared that the British policemen were the finest and noblest militia, because they maintained public tranquility from which inestimable benefits were derived.
