There was a delight fill- incident when Senator Villegas (President of the Assembly of the League), appointed Sir Austen Chamberlain ami Dr. Stresomann scrutineers ol the Council elections. Tho Luo famous figures rose mid cheers, and proceeded to the tribune, paused on the steps, each motioning the other’s precedence. Finally they ascended arm in arm amidst roars cl delight and applause, which was redoubled when, on AI. Briand, on coming up to ■ vote, Sir Austen Chamberlain invitingly motioned him to a seat at the scrutineers’ table. The result of the voting was received with equal good humour and applause by a crowded Assembly Hall. Afembers of the British Delegation congratulated Air Danduraiul (Canada) who will hold Canada’s scat. Belgium's failure to establish her ineligibility at the morning session, is generally regarded as in no manner the insult of hostility, but in view of flic fact that she has sat on tho Council several years, it would ho advantageous for the lion-permanent seats to go in turn to other small Powers. The general opinion in tho morning was that the decision meant xbe first election of a British Dominion, winch the voting confirmed. Canada secured one vote over tho simple majority required. British circles are very gratified, ! nd believe Canada’s ascendancy will be welcomed throughout the Empire, as more closely associating the Dominions with the League’s xvoi-k.
