THE IMPROVEMENT SCHEME

The following are details of the estimated cost of the Timaru Harbour i Board’s improvement scheme: — ! £ i Northern wall 317,000 tons , at 7s 3d 115,000 ! Rails, etc 4,000 i Shunting over Government bridges 4,000 Spur wall from Eastern Extension, 110,000 tons at ! 7s 6d 41,250 Removal of 950 feet of the | Mole 84,000 tons at 11s ... 46,000 Less value of 84,000 tons at ! 7s 3d included in new walls £30,450 ... ... 15,750 Contingencies 10,000 Total 190,000 EASTERN EXTENSION MOLE. £ Building up and strengthening wall estimated cost ... 10,000 ESTIMATED INCREASED REVENUE. It is officially estimated by the Harbour Board that the increased revenue of the port of Timaru after the proposed improvements have been effected will amount to at least £IO,OOO per annum. For the period during which the works are under construction, it is not anticipated that the increase will amount to the abovo sum, but as the works progress and near completion, so the revenue is expected to increase, and on completion it is anticipated that the increase of revenue will reach £IO,OOO at least and thereafter show a substantial increase every year. In addition to the anticipated increase in revenue, the annual cost of upkeep of the harbour in respect of wear and tear and dredging is * expected to bo materially reduced.
