HIGHDEN DESTROYED.

PALMERSTON N., July 5. A thirty-roomed mansion oil the outskirts of the borough, owned by Mr J. Goring Johnston, was burned to the ground to-night. The dwelling was untenanted at the time, Air Johnston having removed the greater part of the furniture to his new home in Hawke’s Bay. The hquse was insured, but the amount was not available tonight.

HOKITIKA, July 5. A destructive lire at 2 o’clock this morning dest/oyed Sime’s tea rooms and the New Zealand Clothing Factory premises.

A strong westerly gale was blowing, and many adjoining premises were endangered.

The Brigade, assisted by a splendid water supply, brilliantly effected a fine save.

Mr John Breeze’s shop and residence on one side and Mr Collyer’s laundry on the other were scorched and damaged by water. All the contents of Mr Sime’s rfnd the factory wore destroyed The insurances are: Sime’s. £475 on the stock and furniture, £350 on the building, New Zealand Clothing Factory, £3OO on the stock, £IOOO (about) on the building and stock; Breeze, £2OO on the stock; Collyer, £2OO on the building £2OO on the furniture, and £2OO on the building. A small quantity of stock, boots and shoes, and some mercery was salvaged from the Clothing Factory buildings.

BRISBANE, July 5. A fire in a. cotton ginnery at Rockhnmrvton destroyed a storage shed containing 30,000,0001 bof seed valued at £15,000. and 200 bales of lint, worth £SOOO. , The seed destroyed represented the hulk nf the supplv for next year’s crop. A Wellington Press Association message says that a stop-work meeting or seamen passed a resolution this morning: “This stop-work meeting of members of the Eederated Seamen’s Union, whole-heartedly endorses the demands of the unemployed for the _ Trade Union rates and for fell maintainance.”
