(From Our Own Correspondent.) ELECTIONS. MAYOR and DEPUTY-MAYOR DEFEATED. Seldom has such interest been displayed in a municipal election, as that which was evinced in the poll taken yesterday. For the first Lime in many years, an election took place lor the Mayoralty, the retiring Mayor (Air G. B. "Cartwright) being opposed by Air T. Gunnioil, who was Alayor irom 1919 to 1925. Four of the retiring Councillors did not seek re-election, hut there were ten nominations for tho nine seats. For the first time in the history of the borough, a poll was taken on the hall-holiday question, the result being that Thursday was retained.

At 7.50 p.m., tlie returning officer (Air A. J. MacPherson) announced the result of tho Mayoral election. In connection with the other results, some delay was caused by returns not coming forward from one- of the polling booths, and tlie final figures were not disclosed till ten o’clock.

The results aroused considerable surprise, as the final figures showed that tho Deputy-Alayor, who bad been on tho Council for 20 years, was tho rejected candidate. Speaking to a very large gathering, the Alayor-elect, Air Gminion, said that ho~ft.lt very proud that evening, as ho had been up against .strong opposition, a.nil bad emerged success!ul. He desired to thank all bis supporters, as well as those who had not supported him. (Applause). Tho unsuccessful candidate (AL" Cartwright) said that he accepted his defeat quite cheerfully. He had been sixteen years on the Council, and lie had nothing whatever to be ashamed of. Ho wished to thank all those who had voted, either for or against him, and ho congratulated Air Gunnioil on his success, and congratulated each of tho successful Councilors. I The room was most artistically dccorat- I cd with evergreens, and neat "black and 1 white cartoons, these’ drawing being the work of Mr Douglas Walker. Numerous now and original games and competitions were indulged in by the very large attendance. Just after supper bad been dispensed, Mr Wilfred Baxter gave a detailed report of the- Methodist Bible Class Easter Camp, this report having been compiled by Mr AY. llewson. Musical items were contributed by Mi sse-s E. Mathieson and E. Brvan, vocal solos; Messrs A. Hewson and Do Ridder, pianoforte duet; and Mr Do Ridder. pianoforte solo. Mr E. Mathieson. wlio capably officiated as M.C., thanked tho donors for their gifts and also the ladies for providing supper. The Rev. R. Richards also voiced the appreciation of the company, and stated that tho success of tho evening reflected the greatest credit on the boys for their energy and enterprise.
