Mr J. Emslie returned from a visit to the North Island yesterday. A cablegram from Sydney announces that Mr E. C. Riddle lias been appointed governor of the Commonwealth Bank, iii succession to Mr Mclvell, who has retired.
Major R. A. R. Lawry, of Spring Valley Estate, Nakuru, Kenya Colony, British East Africa, who has been spending a six months’ holiday in New Zealand, leaves Christchurch to-day to return to East Africa via Sydney and Bombay. Mr E. F. Hollands, general manager of the Electric Light Department in Tiinaru, received word yesterday, from the Institution of Electrical Engineers, London, that he had been admitted as a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, so that he now ranks as M.T.E.E. Mr Churcliouse (ganger at Carterton) lias been elected president of the A.S.R.S., defeating Mr M. Connolly (guard at Dunedin) by 26 votes. In afl, about 7200 votes were cast, and there were six candidates for the office, it is probable that, the majority being small, a recount may be asked for. — (Press Assn.)
