SOVIET’S VIGOROUS PROTEST.
Raid on Pekin Embassy. ALLEGED EREACH OF LAV/. By Cable —Press Association —Copyrigb*. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, April 10. The Soviet Government has presented a Note of protest regarding Ilie Embassy raid. It characterises the raid as disgraceful, ami an act of unprecedented violation of the elemental y rules of international law. It demands that the Chinese police shall immediately leave the Soviet premises; that all arrested members of tbe staff be immediately released, and all proper ty returned.
Declaring that the Soviet possessor adequate resources for recourse to re pressive measures of compulsion, the Note says “Imperialists are provoking the Soviet to war. Pekin has become a tool in the game played by the foreign Imperialists,” and conclude** “The Soviet Government, pending satisfaction of these demands, considers itself bound to sign a protest and to recall from Pekin its Charge d’Affaires with all the Embassy staff, leaving only the personnel to fill Consular functions. Tho Soviet clearly realises that irresponsible circles of foreign Imperialists are provoking the Soviet into war. The Soviet’s policy has made, and will make, a starting point for the interests of the toiling masses of tho whole world, including tho interests of the masses of the Chinese working class in all countrioa-’’
Tho reply of Pekin is described as on act of provocation which is pursued with the aim of making worse the inter, national situation, and transforming the military action practically waged bv certain imperialist Powers against ! China into a new world war. The Soviet declare* it will not give way to I provocation from anyone and bv a!) means will defend the cause of peace between peoples. The Soviet does not doubt that in its aspirations for peace it will meet friendly support from th* toiling masses iai all countries, including primarily Chinese and Soviet citizens. Hie newspaper, “Myako Shimbun,” states that 400 Soviet regulars filtered into Harbin with rifles' and grenades, while arms aro being actively smuggled in from Siberia. There are being stored in various Soviet Consulates m Manchuria. Despatches from Mukden state that the uneasiness there is increasing, the fear being that Marshal Chang-Tso-Lin will next seize the Chinese eastern railway in order to incite Russia into reprisals, which will involve Japan.
