THE MARCH ON TIMARU.
To the Editor of the ‘Timaru Herald.’ Sir.—Last week, this great march took place, and after the various speakers that had been appointed by the Farmers’ Union, had laid their case before the Prime Minister, who expressed his sympathy, they did not get much further ahead, beyond the fact that £1 a ton duty would be placed on flour. The point I would like to make, sir, is this: This time
last year, if I remember right, flour was £2l a ton. The present day price is £ls, a drop of £6 a ton, or a little over 25 per cent. The price of bread then was 1/- a loaf cash. The present price is still 1/- a loaf. With flour down to £ls a ton, bread should be down to 9d the 41h loaf. I understand that it is down to lOd a loaf in Christchurch. The time has now arrived when another great march should take place, viz.,, the march of the consumer. —I am, etc.. WAKE UP.
