WAIMATE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) GOLF. Ideal conditions favoured the opening of tho season by the .Waimate Golf Club, the weather being perfect and the links in excellent order. An enjoyable afternoon was spent by a largo number of players and friends. Luring the afternoon mixed foursomes were played, tho nett scores bang as follows: Mr and Mrs Holmes 39. Mrs Fitch and Mr Wilson 44. Mrs Johnston and Mr Scott 46. Mrs Hertslot and Mr Tweedy 49. Mrs Trotter and Mr Hertslet 50. Mrs Hume and Mr Laiug 54. The president, .Mr T. L. Laing, declared the links open for tho season, and welcomed the visitors. Afternoon tea was partaken of, and greatly enjoyed by all.

A UTOMO BILE ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the committee of the Waimate Automobile Association, there were present —Messrs U. A. Manchester (chairman), A. W. Barnett, it. Sinclair,;T. J)yer, IV. Geddes, Jas. Manchester tied M. Mcßae. A motion of sympathy was extended to Messrs iM. Mcßae and A. W. Barnett upon their recent bereavements. The chairman reported that a, bridge had been erected over a dangerous watercourse on the main road to Oamaru. Although the Bail way Department had promised to communicate with the County Council on the. question, it was reported that nothing had been done to eliminate the ' danger caused by trees at tho railway crossing at Waihao Downs. It was decided that the secretary communicate with the. Church authorities, on whose property the trees stood, requesting them, if possible, to have the danger removed. it was also decided that tho secretary write to the County Council drawing them attention to the danger existing at the corner of the Council’s plantation, situated on the east of the railway line on the Mqrven-Glenavy road: and further, to advise the Council that the danger previously coinplained of at Douglases corner still existed, owing to the fence having not been cut bacii sufficiently. - The Waimate Borough Council wrote drawing attention to the fact that although the railway crossing sigu in Lower High Street' was obscured by trees, it was outside the Borough, and tin; Borough Council had not control over it. The Council had written to the Railway Department, who referred them to the Automobile Association, who, they said, were responsible tor the maintenance of these signs. Jt was resolved that the secretary reply that the Automobile Association had no control whatever over the' Itailwa\S Department’s signs, but the attention of tho Co only Council should bo drawn to the danger caused by the trees obscuring the sign. f Arising from advice received. Irorn the South Island' Motor Lmon, the secretary was advised to write to the Union asking for more definite information as to tiie whereabouts of the bad piece of read on the Redclitl Road.
