DEERSTALKING.
As this season promises io be a good one for stalkers, a few notes re treatment of skins and skulls would’ not be out of place. How often has a stalker returned homo to find the, skins no use, hair shipping and maggot infested, etc... when a little extra care and attention will obviate trouble? After the skin is off; cut as much flesh from the roots of the ears as possible, also the lips; spread out flat m the shade, and brush on crude carbolic acid —undiluted —and leave for 24 hours; fold the outside edges to tho middle; then roll up, with hair side out, and tie up with wooden label suitably inscribed. Skills treated thus will keep in good condition for months. Some stalkers use alum in addition to crude carbolic on extra thick skins, but the main point is to get it on as soon as skinned. Skulls must be boiled— not too much — and jawbones retained for inouting. These remarks are by an experienced taxidermist, AV. J.
