THE DUCHESS
TO PASS TIMARU TO-NIGHT. RENOWN TO GIVE SEARCHLIGHT DISPLAY. H.M.S. Renown, on which His Royal Highness the Duke of Yoric, and. the Duchess, came to New Zealand, ‘will pass oft tlie coast cl Timaru to-night with the Duchess on board, on the way to Stewart Island. This being so, the Mayor of Timaru telegraphed to the Minister of Defence (Hon. F. J. Rolleston) as follows: “Would you approach proper authority and see (if weather fine and visibility good) .if H.M.S. Renown could be diverted from' course after passing Akaroa. to- pass as close as possible to Timaru ? This request comes from, and would be greatly bv. the citizens.”
On Saturday the Mayor received the following telegram from the Hon. F, J. Rolleston: —
“Renown will bn passing Timaru between 3 and 9 o’clock on 'Monday nigl\t. I have asked the captain to stand in close and givo searchlight display, if weather conditions are favourable.” It is probable that there will be ai rocket display, and to entertain, the people while waiting for the warship, the Municipal Band will play in th® rotunda on Caroline Bay. \
