An inquest into the circumstances concerning the death of Patrick Hoaro was hold before the Coroner (Mr C. Orr-Walker) at the Court House yesterday. A deputation to the Minister of Health (Hon. J. A. Young), from Nelson yesterday protested against the establishment of a mental institution at Stoke. The Minister replied that the three new villas which were being erected, Avere on a property that had been purchased by the Government especially for the purpose of developing the new scheme. None of the buildings would be unsightly, and exactly the same policy ivas being pursued elseAvhere. Nelson had had a mental institution for years, and no protest had been made. Yesterday an unusual but very interesting visitor to the port in the form of the second cruiser of the NeAV Zealand Division, H.M.S. Diomede, Avhich came from the Chatham Islands. The Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace), and Mr E. R. Isaac (representing the Timaru Harbour Board) paid an official call on Commodore Sivabey, who is in command of the vessel. The Diomede will remain here for a day or two, and Avill be open -for inspection by the public this afternoon and tomorroAV afternoon from 2 p.m. until 4.30 p.m. The ship AVill not be open for inspection on Sunday. A “soccer” match has been arranged for Saturday at Russell Square betAVeen a team from the Diomede and a combined team from Timaru clubs. A Rugby game Avill be played betAA'een Diomede and Old Boys teams.

A meeting of the executive of the North End Improvement Association was held in Mr C. G. "Baker's office on Tuesday. Mr G. H. Andrews presided. Several matters in connection with the Floral Fete and Bag Day were finalised. The chairman expressed pleasure that both of these events had proved so successful. The secretary reported that the Association had been requested to nominate candidates for the coming Mayoralty and Council elections, and after some discussion it Avas proposed by Mr T. E. Holdgate that, as the North End Association Avas formed primarily. as a beautifying association, it was outside its duties to take part in municipal elections as an association. This Avas carried unanimously, but the hope w r as expressed that all ratepayers would take more interest in Council matters this election than they had done in the past.
