TROUBLE AT FREEZING WORKS.
SLAUGHTERMEN CEASE WORK. By Telegraph—Press Association. HASTINGS, March 16. The slaughtermen at the Whakatu works went slow on Tuesday, and demanded that the free labour butchers be put off. The company dec’ined, with the result that the butchers ceased work at mid-day and demanded to be paid off. * Notwithstanding the short notice, a ready response was made to the appeal to free labour last evening, and this morning the works were carrying on with 35 volunteers and others were coming in during the daw The A. and P. Show, which was just conducting, prevented many from starting, but these say they will go on immediately after if required. A meeting of unionists ill other departments at Whakatu resulted in all knocking off at noon. The company say there will be no trouble filling their places, and anticipate no difficulty in carrying on with volunteers to the close of the season.
The unionists are displaying no hostility, and everything is quiet. The two other works are not affected.
