Favoured with fine weather, and a splendid attendance, the forty-sixth annual gathering held under the auspices of the Mackenzie County Caledonian .Society passed off at Fair-lie yesterday with oomplcte success. A very attractive programme, for the first time for a number of years included cycling event. In the very representative gathering that ,assembled from all parts of the County, the Society had every reason to be gratified, and more so, in the splendid sport that resulted. Under the able supervision of the president, Mr AV. Snushall, and secretary, Mr A. Hammond, an energetic band of officials ensured proceedings passing off with tho utmost smoothness. lincluded in a number of visitors from outside centres were Messrs J. Kennedy, seci-etarv New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, and E. Simmons (Pleasant Point Caledonian Society). The Mackenzie Pipe Band was in attendance throughout tho daand contributed a number of selections. In the running section, close finishes were the order of the day, patrons having little complaint to find with the sport provided in this section. In some cases fields were inclined to be a

littlo on tho small side, but any deficiency in that direction was fully compensated for by keenness with which all events wero contested. In the 220 handicap, D. C. K. Clarke repeated his success of the previous day at Pleasant Point in winning by inches from the scratch man, 0. AA\ Bmith (Oamaru), who ran into iho same place in this event at the Pleasant Point meeting. The half also produced a good finish, A. A. Barron A4O yards), a local runner, winning by two yards from A. R. King (Wiishdyke), who also ran a good taco from the back mark. The big event in this section, the Mackenzie Sheffield over 135 yards, was very keenly contested, and was undoubtedly the best race of the dnv. inches cnlv, separating 11. S. S. McNeill from D. C. Clarke rnd P. Keenan, who doad-heated for second place. McNeill was also cessful in annexing tho 75 yards dasli, Keenan and Clarke being placed second and third respectively. •In the 440, which was also closely fought out over the concluding stages. King was placed first with Chamberlain (Southburn) second. while in tho final event, the mile, the positions were reversed, Chamberlain scoring yet another mile win. A 220 yards handicap for local runners was wen by P. Keenan with R. Creighton second.

In'including two cycling events in their progrnmmo, the Society is to bo complimented upon the enterprise shows. for some years this form of sport, has not received a giyat deal of attention up country, but the presence of several premising young riders in the district, suggests the possibility of this popular branch of athletics, ana incidentally, a very necessary attraction, being taken up with enthusiasm. In the mile handicap, H. Orton rode into first place off scratch, with Smith second, an interesting raco being dedecided by half a length. The same rider also won llie two mile event, beating J. Campbell, the Albury rider, by a length in a close-finish. As usual at Mackenzie sports gatherings, field events occupied a large share of the programme. This section again attracted good competition, and as was the case with the piping and dancing classes, was followed with close interest. The results are as follow:
