HOUSE-WAR MTNG AT TEKAPO HOUSE.
To mark the occasion of the change in the control of Tekapo House, Lake Tekapo, Mr R. R. Beauchamp and Mrs L. Smith, the new proprietors, tendered a dinner and house-warming party on Saturday evening to leading residents of the Mackenzie County and friends from Timaru.
Mr Beauchamp presided, and in the vice-cliair was Mrs Smith.
Jn tendering an apology for unavoidable absence, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., wrote to wish the venture every success. “To show you the possibilities of Tekapo and its glorious climate and ozone, a leading medical authority lias told mo quite recently that the curative power of Tekapo’s climate has only to be made known, and it would require three times the present accommodation to hold the people who would throng to its shores.” On behalf of the Mount Cook Company, Mr R. L. Wigley, in apologising for his absence, wished the now proprietors every success and said ho would be pleased to assist in forwarding Tekapo’s interests. Among those present at the dinner were: Mrs George Murray and Miss Murray, Mr Gerald Murray, and Mr Arthur Major (Braemar), Mr John Cnssie (Guide Hill), Mr and Mrs Sams (Balmoral), Mr and Mrs Hamilton and Mr Douglas Barker (Irishman). Mr and Mrs Bruce Murray and Miss Downes (Godley Peaks), Mr and Mrs Walter Black (Mt. John), Mr and Mrs Page and bliss Craig (Mt. Gerald), Mrs Hamilton and Miss Walter (Ashwick), Mr and Mrs C. J. Talbot (Fairlie), the Rev. and Mrs do Lambert (Fairlie). Mr A. E. Lawrence, editor of “The Timaru Herald,” Mrand Mrs Cecil Webber (Timaru), Mr H. F. Morton (Timaru), Mr L. B. Pearson (Timaru). Mr D. A. Morgan (Ashburton), Mr H. F. Morgan (Ashburton), Miss Lucy Wills and Miss B. M. H. Smith (Moreton, Hampshire, England). After dinner, the following toast list was honoured: “The King,” “The Mackenzie Country,” proposed by Mr H. F. Morton and responded to by Mr C. J. Talbot (chairman of tho Mackenzie County Council) ; “Tekapo House and tho Host and Hostess,” proposed by Mr D. A. Morgan, and responded to by Mrs L. Smith and Mr R. R. Beauchamp. Specially complimentary references nere made to the pleasing association of Mrs Smith with Tekapo House, and general satisfaction was expressed at the no uni of Mrs Smith to co-operate with Mr Beauchamp in the new proprietorship. “Mrs Smith,” said Mr Morgan, in making this popular hostess a presentation of a 6mall travelling bag, “has made her name in connection witli her previous association with Tekapo House, and the travelling public generally and visitors who look forward to spending happy and health-recruiting days on the shores of Lake Tekapo and its attractive district, whole-heartedly welcome Mrs Smith back and wish her well in her new. enterprise.” ' ' v 1 Mrs Smith suitably acknowledged the presentation which she said had taken her by surprise. She hoped to see all her oid friends back again. , -• Responding to the toast of- ; “The Host and Hostess,”' Mr Beauchamp was warmly received. Ho said he hoped to restore Tekapo House to its previous, standard of popularity. He was glad, to make the acquaintance of so many representatives of wonderful Mackenzie Country, and he hoped to create a homelike atmosphere at Tekapo House: which would make the place the centre of the social activitie’s of the' while' district. ' ■ • • In the-evening, a jolly dance was tendered- the residents of the district by the new proprietors. Tho spacious dining room was cleared and dancing was indulged in until midnight,: when Mr John Cassie, on behalf of tlie guests, wished Mr Beauchamp and Mrs Smith success in -their ’enterprise. • Ho thanked .both.'host and hostess for the happy evening they had provided Lathe residents of the district and the visitors. Cheers were given for Mrs Smith and Mr Beauchamp, and a delightful evening concluded with tho singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”

The bachelors and spinsters of Crick'ewood held their. annul ball qn Wednesday evening, iii the goods shed, which was tastefully decorated with 1 greenery, spring llowors, and streamers.* Music was supplied by the Campbell family, extras being played by W. and J. S.iiclair, while Mr O’Connor made an efficient M.C. A lucky spot Waltz was won by Miss M. McLean, and Mr W. Sinclair. During tlni evening songs were rendered by Mr Rt.
