Contracts toiailing ;C35,528 were let by the Auckland Electric Power Board tor the purpose of the plant that will be needed to receive Hie hydro-cleetrio power from Arapuni in 1928. Of the total amount £‘30,000 goes to British firms, and £B3OO to an American concern; Uiie Swiss and one German firm also tendered for tbe machinery, hut in each instance the prices were highei than the lowest British tender. The question of whether the acceptance of an American tender was in order was raised. Mr J. Rowe asked whether it was non a fact that the Board had n minute on its books binding it not to ac-. cept foreign tenders. The chairman (Mr W. J. Hold worth) : No. The resolution says we will give preference to British firms. The general manager said that in electrical matters he did not regard American firms ns being foreign. The American firm in question was one o( the best in existence, and tho machinery for whidi it had tendered was ol high efficiency.
